Dear *,

Researching topic of a Firefox tracking protection I came across this wiki article https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Tracking_protection#Telemetry

Tracking protection as it stays here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tracking-protection was already enabled by my browser. In my browse (about:telemetry#histograms-tab ) only TRACKING_PROTECTION_ENABLED, and TRACKING_PROTECTION_PBM_DISABLED.

However according wiki page TRACKING_PROTECTION_SHIELD looks much interesting.

How can I get this data?

Thank you

Hello CORPARIT,

The shield icon will appear when Firefox is actively blocking trackers on a page, as you probably read in the article you mentioned :

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tracking-protection

You can check the preferences on the about:config page :

Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type in the search bar trackingprotection

And check the preferences and their values.

Probably a redundant remark : Assuming that you want to use Tracking Protection : You can check "Always" under "Tracking Protection" in Preferences => Privacy & Security

Thank you

I checked trackingprotection in about:config and put all available options in True . Still I do not get histogram with TRACKING_PROTECTION_SHIELD or other data with this label.

Like I mentioned before : the shield icon will appear when Firefox is actively blocking trackers on a page - that doesn't happen in your case  ?

yes. Shield icon is available at least on multiple news websites.

Well, that's good, isn't it  ? Or have I been misconstruing your question  ?

if you go in your address bar and type about:telemetry#histograms-tab

You ll see graphs for different properties. According wiki I should see TRACKING_PROTECTION_SHIELD histogram. However, it is not appearing. Why?

There is no such thing as a "Tracking Protection Shield
Histogram" .....

Where on this page do you see that mentioned  ?

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Tracking_protection#Telemetry

it can be not histogram but as I understood I should have some collection of data

TRACKING_PROTECTION_SHIELD: for each pageload, 0 if the shield is not shown (no trackers), 1 if the shield is crossed-out (page is whitelisted) and 2 if the shield is shown normally (trackers blocked)

If you click on TRACKING_PROTECTION_SHIELD you wil get some kind of data table. I belive it should be in telemetry too, because wiki article is about telemetry.

I would like to access this TRACKING_PROTECTION_SHIELD browser generated data.

Those data refer to the alerts that are sent to safebrowsing-telemetry@mozilla.org.

Looks strange to me that I cannot easily access this data, especially in an open source product.

Technically, in histograms.json file on line 11237 a "TRACKING_PROTECTION_SHIELD" looks like should be part of histograms.

Only flag and count histograms have default values. All other histograms start out empty and are only submitted if a value is recorded.

Have you done this yet :

Type in the address bar about:telemetry

If you have Tracking Protection set to "Always", you will see that telemetry is enabled.
