That to me would seem to indicate printer/driver issues. If you didn't do a Printer Network setup it will not see the printer. I got a HP8400 and HP227dw connected to a Netgear router as network printers and I can print to either printer from my desktop or laptops without.

I probably didn't provide enough information. The printer has been installed for a long time directly attached to a different pc and shared on the network. On the laptop, i.e. not the host, it shows up as a network printer in the drop down and works on Adobe, Chrome etc etc. i.e. everything else. The only place where it doesn't show up in the printer drop-down is firefox. It used to, but does not now. It has worked as a network printer in this fashion for several years. In fact, the fax driver for the printer shows up in firefox (and everything else), but not the printer driver (but does in everything else).

The printer shows up in Control Panel and I can print a test page and I can print to a pdf and then with Adobe, print on that printer ... but not directly from firefox.

Thanks - I tried anything that seemed relevant but these mostly focus on problems printing, not covering a printer not showing up in the drop-down. I'll have to try deleting the printer and reinstalling but first I'll make sure that I have the device driver since the printer is at least 5 years old.

Throwing in the towel. I don't have time for this. The last update to the driver was for xp and it won't install even in compatibility mode. I give up. The printer is going to be retired.
