firefox 5 won't remember passwords after upgrading from v4

The automated upgrade from FF 4 to FF 5 did not complete successfully. After I rebooted my PC I did a full install of FF v 5. Since then FF won't remember passwords to sites.

I have done an uninstall/reinstall of FF v5 and it did not fix the problem.

I tired deleteing signons.sqlite from my profile directory hoping that it would create a new, valid file.

It still does not work!
