Downloaded & installed update - restart had lost home page & bookmarks - some of which I urgently need, and regenerating the list will take me a VERY long time. Also, when I try to give feedback I'm told I need to download "latest version" (so what's the point of updates) Bookmarks etc. still lost - feedback page not responding to allow posting of comment. How do I get my settings back - this is URGENT.

As long as you didn't do a complete uninstall of Firefox 3.6, they should still be around.

First, you may want to make a backup of your profile folder. It contains not only your current bookmark list, but a folder of backups. But these are not saved forever. To back up Firefox, see Backing up your information.

The following article has suggestions for recovering bookmarks: Lost Bookmarks | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help.

Thanks - after a bit of hunting for the relevant links the problem is now sorted - but it still shouldn't have happened. There's obviously a bug in whichever update gave me the option to save current settings.
