Since doing a Refresh of my Firefox installation - I have noticed several changes in behavior.
target="_blank" has changed its behavior - it now causes the browser to jump to the new tab (regardless of ANY settings that may stop it changing) - the middle click business "SUCKS".
When downloading multiple links from an index file - it was just a matter "tab" - "enter" to work down the list. The new behavior causes too much tab jumping about on the screen - very wasteful of time and energy.
When I actually click a link on a page - the same things happen - too many clicks required to get the job done.
I generally download files in batches of 300 files.
Any other options are too time consuming !!!

Solution choisie
Let's start with the issue of links you are sending to a new tab, and whether Firefox switches immediately or lets them load in the background.
I'm assuming you are a somewhat nerdy user and that this will sound familiar. The third bullet definitely could be part of the solution.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.
More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.
(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste inBack and pause while the list is filtered
- "browser.search.context.loadInBackground" => refers to the right-click context menu item to send the selection to your default search engine (default: false = switch immediately)
- "browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground" => refers to bookmarks (default: false = switch immediately)
- "browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground" => refers to popup windows (target="_blank") diverted to a new tab instead (default: false = switch immediately)
- "browser.tabs.loadInBackground" => refers to links you send to a new tab yourself using Ctrl+click or middle-click or the right-click context menu (default: true = do not switch)
You can restore a default value using the left-arching reset button at the right end of a row, or double-click to toggle between false and true.
After that, what are the remaining issues?
I enabled the above three solutions (set to true) - and they all worked perfectly - much to my satisfaction.
Thank you very much for your excellent advice.
