why are messages in inbox showing under other correspondents' names?

When I sort on correspondents, if, say, I have a message from Susan, messages from Tom, Dick, and Harry will appear in the sorted list under Susan's name. If I then sort under date, Susan's name will remain in the list for Tom, Dick, and Harry's messages, even though the individual headers give the correct name for each message. I noticed this a few days ago, and it's still happening. How do I stop this?

Are you perhaps using Threaded view, where messages are grouped by "conversations" in a tree arrangement? Here's an article about the feature and how to enable and disable it:

Nope, it's not threading, which is a nuisance I always try to get rid of
