How to make Firefox recognize an existing profile
I'm using Firefox in Windows. I lost all of my bookmarks... never mind how, I think I can prevent it from happening again... and I'm trying to figure out whether there is a way to recover them.
Looking in the profile folder, I see three profiles. One is listed on the about:profiles page, and is identified as the default. The other two aren't listed there at all.
I need to select each of those other two and see whether my bookmarks can be recovered from them. But how. The about:profiles page has a button for creating a new profile, but not for adding an existing profile to the page. Either it's listed there or it's not.
It seems to me that I could create a new profile and make it the default folder, then quit Firefox and replace it with a copy of one of the profiles I want to investigate. However, I lost my bookmarks by doing something similar to that, so I'm wary of doing it again.
Can someone explain what is happening here--why there are three profiles in the default profile's folder but only one list listed, and why there's apparently no provision for making Firefox list the others?

Apparently my first post was unclear. That's exactly what I was saying; that's why I had to post a question.
It's indeed somewhat unclear... So: the two profiles in question appear in the Firefox menu, but not on about:profiles?
The OP mentioned: "Looking in the profile folder" — I assumed that was in the file system.
You can try opening each profile directly with Firefox’s Profile Manager and check the bookmarks before changing or replacing anything. This should be safer than overwriting the default profile.

Then the OP should read my questions more carefully :D
I think I got lost at "why there are three profiles in the default profile's folder but only one list listed" — pictures of the folder structure would help, as this sounds one level off (which is way more off than a working state).

I tried this, but the Profile Manager has the same limitation as the about:profiles page: it lets you create, rename, and delete profiles, but if the profile you want is not listed, you're out of luck.
I may create an experimental profile and replace it with copies of the profiles I want to investigate, despite the fact that a similar operation made me lose my bookmarks in the first place.
Meanwhile I have managed to restore a lot of my bookmarks by other means, so the problem is now a major irritation instead of a disaster. It I can't solve it my world will not end.
