email with the same Reference are sorted from by date in ascending order. Would like to have it in desending order. Is that possible and how?

Do you mean threads ? At the moment all threaded mail is displayed based on the initial email and all replies are listed in the order created so appear ascending.
There has been a bug report asking for them to be sorted descending so newest is at the top of the associated threads. But there does not seem to be any movement on this. It's a lot more complicated than it seems. It's always been done in the order of communications, so threads get appended. Same as in any forum posting, the newest is always appended.
