I see you are using a mac. Would the contact be in the read only mac address book?

the actual thunderbird address book is the one where I can not delete any contacts
yes and they are all in the mac folders address book -- the other mail addresses have almost nothing in them
The mac folder is read only. Thunderbird has never had write access to them. IF you want full control copy the contact to a "thunderbird" address book and delete from the mac addressbook.
