Firefox stutters when switching tabs

This is an issue that keeps coming up with Firefox and it really frustrates me. When switching tabs (either with the cursor or by keyboard shortcut) there is a slight but noticeable delay before the switch happens. I've noticed this is a quirk which tends to get resolved by version updates but it manages to creep back in, especially after shutting down or rebooting my machine.

I've tried quite a few things myself to sort it out – the refresh feature, clearing history/cookies, disabling add-ons, etc. But none of those have ever worked. I'm wondering if this is a known issue which has a solution? Cheers.

This issue has seemingly been fixed as part of the 51.0 (64bit) update. Tab switching is nice and responsive. Hopefully it stays like this!

Are your system resources okay, such as... % RAM used? % CPU usage? Other than these, I don't know what else to check, but I am not an expert.

This could be related to Firefox using multi-process tabs.

@jpants, I've not noticed anything to suggest that it's the system resources. General speed of the browser is alright as are the other applications that I have open. I didn't have the tab stuttering problem last week and I was running quite a few power-hungry applications.

@cor-el, I remember messing about with this setting a while back. Mine was false by default (it wasn't allowed by my add-ons). I just toggled it to true and restarted but it didn't appear to fix the intended issue – not straight away anyway.
