I recently embedded a video clip in one of my posts: https://sunlog.ro/2016/09/cutiuta-cu-rochii-de-vis/

This clip is a simple mp4 file hosted on Flickr. Chrome has no problem with it, yet Firefox won't play it.

I personally use Chrome and I was notified about this glitch by one of my readers, who uses Firefox. She could only see the clip after switching to Chrome. I tested myself and quite true, Firefox won't play it. Instead, it displays the following error:

Video format or MIME type is not supported. (see picture)

What can be done so that everyone can see the clip, even if they use Firefox?

Solution choisie

On Windows, Firefox uses the Media Foundation to decode MP4 videos. Unfortunately, the Media Foundation was never released for Windows XP, so XP users historically have not been able to view videos on sites that use <video> tags without a "fallback" option for Flash or another plugin.

In another thread, a user said that one of the Mozilla-supplied plugins might help with this problem. I haven't explored it myself:

So, it seems that Chrome has an edge here, because it can play this files. Or well, maybe not, because it's no longer updated for Windows XP. :)
