Firefox RT App using vast amounts of memory... what gives?
I'm running FF 47.0 on a Win 7 Pro PC and have been using the RT add-on for a long time without problems (could open 20+ tabs without major slowing), but recently merely opening 5-6 tabs consumes >1.5K million whatevers in the Task Mgr Memory (private working set) column causing major slowing. Saving tabs in Panorama & restarting FF fixes the issue until I open the next 5-6 tabs. I believe this also happens when I open pages on RT's website as well. Anybody know what's happening & how to stop it?

Firefox 47 was released on June 7th and most people would have installed it between June 7th and June 14th. If the problem started before that time frame, then it probably existed in Firefox 46 as well. There are experts in triangulating the exact changes which trigger website problems (called identifying a regression range), but I am not one of them... Hopefully someone else has time to work on this.

Some pages use a huge amount of memory in Firefox. For example, the Facebook news feed which has continuous scrolling and frequent embedded videos. Do RT pages have a design that continues to load more and more content into the same tab?
Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
Any improvement?
First, thanks for the very prompt reply.
I did restart in Safe Mode: The RT App or Add-on (a small green RT square on the far right end of the bookmarks bar) doesn't come up in Safe Mode. Opened RT's webpage and opened 10 tabs and watched as the CPU use rose to > 15% and the "Private Working Set" column rose to > 1.1K million units. I've noted RT's making much more use of small embeds called 'Giphy's' which may account for the increased demand.
Okay, that implies the add-on is innocent.
I'm not sure why the animated GIFs are chewing up so much memory. Do you think this is a new problem in Firefox 47?
It could be... but I don't know. The rapid changes (new FF versions, RT's increased use of Giphys, and who knows what else makes isolation of a single issue difficult - suppose I could reload a prior version of FF and check but that would only be helpful to FF in creating a 'fix' for a new version. Suspect that could be more efficiently addressed by the FF folks by installing the RT app (install option pops up on RT pages) and testing themselves. I'm sure they're (you're?) far better equipped to assess the issue than I am.
