can't connect to server

I get the message. Thunderbird will not connect to my service provider server. I have had this program running for 3 years with no issues. I uninstalled the program and my profile from the PC. Re installed and tried to re set up my email account. I contacted my service provider and ran thru a few checks but all is well with all other programs on my PC. I don't have any virus software running. The weird thing my Firefox now does not work either. It says can't connect to server, Yet others like google and IE work fine.
