Thunderbird stops sending and receiving messages until I reboot system.
I have had the problem for over a year. I am running WIN 7, with latest version of Thunderbird, but had the same problem with previous versions. Thunderbird works fine and then after awhile, it will stop receiving messages. The only way I can restore getting messages is to reboot my system.
I have tried flushing the DNS, restarting services, but still cannot connect. Sometimes I get a message that the passwords were lost, but currently, it is just not connecting and no error messages are appearing. Restarting Thunderbird does not work. I have to reboot my system.
In the last week, I can only get a couple downloads of messages before I have to reboot. So, I reboot my system several times per day.

I don't have an answer, but have seen a similar problem elsewhere and I wonder if you have the same.
When Thunderbird has locked up, it was found that some Internet access activity in the browser would get Thunderbird running again. Various suggestions were that the NIC had gone to sleep, (power saving settings?) the router had gone to sleep, or a change in MTU might have helped. This last one was connected with an observation that it got into trouble handling a message with a large attachment.
Thank you, but this does not appear to be associated with router or connection problems. The browser can access the Internet, but I cannot receive messages.
One interesting fact: I can send messages, just not receive them.
One possible clue, I turned on the Error Console and see this:
Error: : Component returned failure code: 0x8055000a [nsIMsgIncomingServer.getNewMessages] Source File: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js Line: 2719
I also disabled Norton 360 AV, but still have same problem.
I also have restarted without any extensions. After I write this, I will have to reboot to start getting email again.
