In lower right, tells me I have a total of 3,342. What is that? Total of ?what?

the Unread: number, number, information is always there, however as I asked, this total which has been accumulating gradually with every function I seem to use, is always there. I tried delete, trash, sent file...nothing. It is still there and growing. I think it is counting my emails and putting them somewhere. please help.
