My bookmarks keep disappearing after a pup
A few days ago I collected a pup installer trying to convert a youtube vid to mp3. I got rid of it using Malwarebytes, however it still had unwanted browser add ons, which Firefox questioned and I deleted. Every time I opened a browser these add ons tried to reinstall, so I downloaded a new copy of Firefox using IE but the problem persisted. I ran a full scan using MBAM and one using SAS and nothing appearing. So I installed the 3 month old copy of Firefox I had saved and then let it update. Perfect, problem solved, I thought. I then used Mozbackup restore from a pre-virus time, which I have used for years, and had all my bookmarks back. However, now, every time I open a browser all of my Bookmarks are there, but if I close the browser and re-open later, all of my bookmarks disappear in front of me. I have tried restoring them and then doing another backup using Mozbackup while they're all there but it's not helping. I can't restore my bookmarks every time I open a browser. Please help?

Do you sync your Firefox bookmarks to the cloud, either using Firefox Sync, Xmarks, or another service? Just wondering whether that has somehow gone haywire.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- Anti-Rootkit Utility - TDSSKiller
- AdwCleaner (for more info, see this alternate AdwCleaner download page)
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

How did you check the bookmarks? Was it thru the Bookmark Toolbar, or did you open the Bookmarks Manager? Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Then select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac:<Command>) <Shift> B.
Bookmarks appear in the Bookmarks Manager but not in the main menu http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=1456901#1456901

Checked the bookmarks? I'm not sure what you mean. Every time I open a fresh browser and click on my 'bookmarks' tab to go to a page they just start deleting in front of me until they're all gone. I am running Windows 8.1 with Avast as my antivirus, and using MBAM and SAS for full scans. Nothing is showing, and my browser is not being hijacked. There are no 'extra' add ons or programs, checked all that. Currently, the only way I can function is to keep the browser open. Thank you for your help.

Hi there, no I don't sync them, I've always used Mozbackup and it's been faultless. I even tried two different backups to no avail. Thank you.

Please follow my instructions to open the Bookmarks Manager. Also, use the web link I posted.
I am running Windows 8.1 with Avast as my antivirus,
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

I did follow your instructions and checked the link which was not relevant thank you. I have no toolbars whatsoever and all add ons are disabled. Disabling all add ons was the first thing I did. Please don't feel you need to help if you are going to treat me like an idiot.

You never said if you opened the Bookmarks Manager.
Good day, and good luck.
