why has every folder and entire email setup disappeared?

hi! i have used thunderbird for several years on this laptop.... this morning on switching on everything has gone... it is asking me to set up a new email account.... every inbox and local folder has disappeared and the screen looks as if i have just downloaded the programme for the first time.... my addresses are still there.... help please!
