Windows 10 article - setting a default browser

  1. Hello there,

I've marked an article ready for localization: How to change your default browser to Firefox on Windows. The key locales for this one are de, es-es, fr, it, pl, pt-br.

We only need to localize the version 39 instructions in time for the Windows 10 release (July 29). You may localize version 40 if you wish, but know that there will probably be more changes as bugs are being fixed.

I've left comments in the article with this information. Thanks for all your help!

  2. May specifying key locales put off some locales, who may not realise we really expect Windows 10 uptake to be big and rapid.

Should this be a priority article for all locales ?

    Hello all!
As you may be aware, Windows 10 launches next week, July 29th.

This will likely be the largest release of Windows in some time, as it will be offered for free to all users of Windows 7 and 8 for the next year.
So unlike previous versions of Windows, where only a few users would upgrade at the time of release and most other users would wait until they replaced their machine to use the new OS.
This time around however, we can expect a significant portion of existing users to be upgrading to Windows 10 in the first few weeks/months it is available (similarly to how we see upgrades to new versions of Mac OSX). .... {edit emphasis & typo ~J99)

  3. Changes and Updates to the article.

No doubt you will get information direct from joni if necessary, and I would hope Joni will update this thread.

There have been major changes though not marked RFL I guess maybe L10N will need to localise now to meet the Windows10 Release, then come back a day or two after and localise again.

I posted more details in the German thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/l10n-forum/711077?last=66247#post-66247 the available pre release Windows 10 was tested and the en-US versions have details with screenshots.

  4. Hello, Personally I don't even have a copy of Windows 10 and haven't planned to upgrade my Windows 7 virtual machine yet.

Is there a way to find localized strings? Once I would use

    http://www.microsoft.com/Language/default.aspx

but I don't seem to find the strings related to Windows 10.

    Thanks.

  5. Another little question: why the image for Fx <39 are taken with Windows 8 and not with Windows 10?

  6. it's reused from https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser#firefox:win8 as the instructions are the same...
  7. Hi Underpass,

Here's a tip from Mark about Windows 10: you can use the strings you see in Windows 8/8.1. The language is almost the same, so there'll only be minor corrections, if any, but the instructions will be understood.

Also, regarding the fx <39 screenshots, that's what shows up when you use the ESR version of Firefox.

Sorry, but how it is possible? Does the same operating system (Windows 10) behave differently according to the Firefox version used?

  9. yes. if you read that blog post by a firefox dev working on the issue, he describes that they changed how the "make default" button works in win10 in firefox 39 (and might change again in a future version): https://msujaws.wordpress.com/2015/07/18/default-browsers-and-windows-10/ the part about the old API triggering just an error message seems to have been fixed by ms in the last minute before they released their win10 rtm build, it opens the win8-like dialog now instead of the error message...

  10. So, if you use an old version of Firefox you see this screen (as for Windows 8)

    Default - Win8 pt 2

And if you use Firefox 39 or higher you see this one

    default apps win10

    Right?

So, if you use an old version of Firefox you see this screen (as for Windows 8) [[Image:Default - Win8 pt 2]] And if you use Firefox 39 or higher you see this one [[Image:default apps win10]] Right?
  11. yes, that's the current state. though apparently there are plans to change it again to something like this opening: https://msujaws.files.wordpress.com/2015/07/2015-07-18_1653.png
