[In KB] Viewing video in Firefox without a plugin

  1. more options

    Is this a Bug or a missing article, or other?
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Viewing%20video%20in%20Firefox%20without%20a%20plugin

    When that page loads in Firefox 4.0 on a Windows PC, on a slow a PC the page loads and then disappears - with a fast PC it doesn't load any article content at all.

    Is the content not ready for the public yet?
    Or is that article not applicable to Firefox 4.0?
    If the latter, maybe there should be like a "place holder" that says This support article is not applicable to Firefox 4.0 ??

    That KB page disappearing after being first loaded confused a 4.0 user in this support thread.

  2. It is in the list of articles to be updated for Firefox 4. But in this case, the use of {for fx3}fx3 content{/for}{for fx35}fx35 content{/for} makes it empty for fx4.

    I removed the fx3 content, the fx35 tag, replaced out-of-date images, fixed the broken table, added a WebM format description & video sample, a troubleshooting section, a summary, and keywords.

    It needs review.

  3. HTML5 audio and video in Firefox

    Looks like this is right down Michael Verdi's alley .... let's wait for him to review.

    One thing I did notice, you are showing the WebM link for everyone ... it should be only shown for Firefox 4, right? It would be great if an OGG video with sound (or, for fx4, a WebM video) could be embedded within the KB article as a screencast, instead of just having links, For example,

  4. Something else to add in this article under Troubleshooting (or to Fix common audio and video issues?) is that JavaScript must be enabled in the Settings for web content, pop-ups, fonts, and languages.

    Bug 449358 - Video/Audio UI Controls not functioning when JavaScript is disabled

    Something else to add in this article under Troubleshooting (or to [[Video or audio does not play]]?) is that JavaScript must be enabled in the [[Options window - Content panel]]. • WebM and VP8 are specific to fx4.
    • the test page provided by Alice is linked (test videos are not embedded).
    • a troubleshooting controls sub-section has been added.

  6. Michael Verdi just added new videos with sound to Get started with Firefox - An overview of the main features which can be "embedded" within this article, instead of the link:

    {for not fx35}

    {/for}

    {for fx35}

    {/for}

    I edited the last revision to include the above videos so that users have an actual, working ogv video within the article itself, to test. I also made a couple of small changes, like referring to "open format" or "media format" instead of "codec".

    P.S. Feel free to re-edit :-)

  7. I edited the last revision to include the above videos so that users have an actual, working ogv video within the article itself, to test

    I disagree. These videos are unrelated to the article topic. Moreover, English embedded videos are removed in every locales, so non-English speaking users won't see these test videos.

    like referring to "open format" or "media format" instead of "codec".

    I also disagree. Ogg or WebM can be called Open Format even if I prefer the Container Format more explicit term, but not Theora, VP8 (video compression) or Vorbis (audio compression) that are codecs.

    I rejected your revision.

    ''I edited the last revision to include the above videos so that users have an actual, working ogv video within the article itself, to test'' I disagree. These videos are unrelated to the article topic. Moreover, English embedded videos are removed in every locales, so non-English speaking users won't see these test videos. ''like referring to "open format" or "media format" instead of "codec".'' I also disagree. Ogg or WebM can be called Open Format even if I prefer the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_format_%28digital%29 Container Format] more explicit term, but not Theora, VP8 ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_compression video compression]) or Vorbis ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_compression_%28data%29 audio compression]) that are codecs. I rejected your revision.
  8. I can understand wanting a link but that can be in addition to the "embedded" video, not as a replacement. I feel that having an example of open media right in the article is valuable, so I did another edit based on both of our revisions and rejected your revisions.

    Using the term "codec" is overly technical (whether or not it's correct) so rewrote that section to remove it. Although you want to use codec to describe Vorbis audio and Theora video, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_format_%28digital%29 article refers to them as audio and video "formats", under Multimedia container formats:

    *Ogg (standard container for Xiph.org audio fomat Vorbis and video format Theora)

    I also don't think you need two sections on troubleshooting. Simply a note on enabling JavaScript if the audio/video controls are not visible is enough.

    Needs review ... hopefully by Michael Verdi, or Chris Ilias, who worked on the original article.

    P.S. Here's the bug report on this KB article, for the background:

  9. in addition to the "embedded" video, not as a replacement.

    There is an image size limit of 200KB for low bandwidth connection, so including an embedded video of 15MB with no added value for the article is not the best thing to do, according to me.

    Moreover, users who are using IE won't see this video.

    I did another edit based on both of our revisions and rejected your revisions.

    Rejecting revisions makes lost the article contribution to the writer. Only dead branch revisions must be rejected as stated in this thread.

    Using the term "codec" is overly technical, so rewrote that section to remove it.

    In my previous revisions, I clarified the differences between Theora/Vorbis/VP8 and Ogg/WebM. In your revision, we don't know what Theora/Vorbis/VP8 are. If you don't like the codec name, use the audio/video compression name.

    I also don't think you need two sections on troubleshooting.

    I agree with this change.

  10. scoobi,

    If you're still up for it, go ahead and edit my last revision (or yours) to create a new version that takes everything discussed here into account.

    In that case, we must archive all how-to articles related to plugins. It is useful for the link to camendesign, missing controls, searches for webm.

    The comment was mine and my point was there isn't any "how-to" to write. You just click play. Just like videos that use a plugin. Also, not many people are searching for webm on sumo. 287 of the 9.94 million visits to SUMO last month were for this article. We could potentially help 15X more people by making Fix common audio and video issues better if we can.

  17. The information in the article is up-to-date and it's linked from Fix common audio and video issues to explain open media. I don't think it should be archived (simply to reduce the total number of SUMO articles?) because it has a low page-hit count.
