I want to move my TB data store to a different drive but am unsure whether just to move the profile folder or all the other stuff like installs.ini as well. I have changed the datastore entry in settings, but do I need to modify the profiles.ini file as well, and if so what should it be changed to? At present it is in c:\users\mike\app data\roaming\thunderbird and I want it to go to D:\mail profiles. I'd be grateful for advice please. Thanks Mike Phillips

Try this:

  1. create an empty folder in drive D. any name will do. I suggest NOT having any spaces in name
  2. click help>troubleshootinginformation
  3. scroll to 'profiles' and click 'about:profiles'
  4. click the button to create new profile
  5. enter a short name, such as DRIVED
  6. click Next
  7. click 'choose' and select the folder on drive D that you created
  8. click finish
  9. , now, the active profile is in the listed profiles on the screen. click 'open folder'
  10. exit thunderbird - IMPORTANT
  11. you are in the profile for the current profile. select ALL and COPY to clipboard
  12. click to the new empty folder on drive D and PASTE contents there
  13. now, restart thunderbird. you are still in old profile at the moment
  14. click help>troubleshootinginformation and, again, scroll to 'profiles' and click 'about:profiles'
  15. your new profile is listed. set it as default
  16. all should now be okay. thunderbird may want to restart.
  17. when al is well and done, you can then delete the profile from drive C.
  18. I think you've earned a beer and some peanuts to celebrate.

NOTE; in future, if you install thunderbird to a new PC, you will save time by backing the appdata\roaming\thunderbird folder NOW. Then, on the reinstall, do it in these steps: - install thunderbird on new pc and start once and exit - replace the existing appdata\roaming\thunderbird folder with the backup - when you now restart thunderbird, it will be using the profile on drive D
