how do I fix slow loading emails and very slow deleting email on my macbook pro 2009?

emails are slow to load on my 2009 macbook pro and when I click delete it takes about 10 to 15 seconds for it to delete. no problem on my imac happens. both machines are running mavericks. what is the fix for this?

I gave up and uninstalled thunderbird and reinstalled it and it is working now.
