If I click on a link on a web site, I can not return to the previous page by clicking the back button, the back button and forward button are not blue and active, they are gray and inactive.

Running Windows Vista Home Premium, and Mozilla Firefox 3.6.16. Problem started 2 days ago. Most all web sites are affected. Home page of Yahoo.com is affected also. If I click on a link or a photo on a web page, I'm stuck there. I can't return to the previous page. My back arrow buttons in the upper left corner are not lit in blue. They are gray and do nothing if I click them. I have to close the tab to get off the web site. all web site seem to have this problem, Yahoo.com, Ebay.com, etc.
