I am in China and do not seem to be able to connect to the Mozilla Firefox VPN.
I am in China and do not seem to be able to connect to the Mozilla Firefox VPN, to access my gmail (and other features). When I try to turn it on, I get a message: "Could not connect to VPN: Try again in a few minutes" I did this many times. Should I continue trying or is it hopeless?

It may be but try again. Have you read up on availability and this VPN is a proxy not a real VPN so it is variable. Check out availability via
The built-in VPN in desktop Firefox is currently available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom and United States as shown on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/built-in-vpn
Its possible you may be able to connect in not in one of the listed places, perhaps if you are close enough.
Also the built-in VPN in Firefox routes your browsing traffic through a proxy network that replaces your IP address before it reaches a website so it is not a full VPN like the standalone subscription based Mozilla VPN app is for example.
