Google workspace account will not authorize

I can not get my google workspace account to authorize in Thunderbird. Using IMAP setting. Thunderbird automatically finds the correct server settings, but when I hit "continue", it gives an authentication error.

I have spent extensive time with the google workspace admin console help. This is the final result: "Thank you for trying all the steps so far. Since Thunderbird has already been added under App Access Control in the Admin console, IMAP is enabled, and cookies/cache have been cleared, but the authentication error still persists, this points to a possible issue with the application’s client ID used by Thunderbird for OAuth. In this case, you will need to contact the Thunderbird support team to verify the correct client ID for their OAuth implementation. Once you have the correct client ID, we can then configure it properly in the Google Admin console so the authentication works successfully. We’ve confirmed that all Google Workspace settings on our side are correct, so the next step must be coordinated with Thunderbird’s team."

Therefore, here I am.

I should note that my Thunderbird installation is working fine with my personal gmail account as well as a different domain using other email servers (ipage). So this seems to be something specific to google workspace for business account.

Try to delete the OAuth authentication token Thunderbird has remembered for your Google Workspace account. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button ≡ > Settings > Privacy & Security > Saved Passwords > Show Passwords

When attempting to authenticate make sure cookies are enabled in Thunderbird.

Thanks Christ1: I deleted any password associated with the email address as well as any account (from all my prior manual attempts). After trying to set up the account again (I received the same error), this shows up in the saved logins (not sure if this means anything to you): "oauth://accounts.google.com (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar https://www.googleapis.com/auth/carddav https://mail.google.com/)"

Thunderbird was set to "accept cookies from sites"... always.

So no joy, yet.

oauth://accounts.google.com (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar https://www.googleapis.com/auth/carddav https://mail.google.com/)

This is for Google Calendar and Contacts.

Thunderbird automatically finds the correct server settings, but when I hit "continue", it gives an authentication error.

What is the exact error message? Please post a screenshot https://support.mozilla.org/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem

Note, for the OAuth authentication to work

  • cookies need to be enabled in Thunderbird,
  • don't run a local web server or any other service listening on TCP port 80 while attempting to authenticate, and
  • don't use a VPN while attempting to authenticate.
