- if you see the 'quick filter' button above message list pane, click the small icon to its right. If you do NOT see the quick filter button, click view>layout and tick 'message list header' and then click the icon described. If you don't see menu bar, click alt key and then the view>layout menu for message list header and the icon by the 'quick filter' button.

Thanks for your speedy reply. Mind you Mozilla really went over the score in hiding it well! It ought to be an option in View>Layout or not?
