In the past I was able to create an "mass mail" by clicking on a sub-group within my address book. I can't do that anymore. The option to "write" is no longer available.

So,

I tried following the instructions (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-create-and-use-mailing-lists-thunderbird#w_create-a-mailing-list) to create a mailing list. That option doesn't seem to be available.

How do I send an email to multiple recipients (i.e. Family), without manually entering each address?

The easiest approach would be to click 'write', then click F9 (or View>ContactsSidebar) and then tick the names you want to send to, or the groupname you want to send to.
