HI, if have a corrupted registry run the sfc /scannow command from a Dos Prompt Administrator ( sfc<space>/scannow ) to fix it.

apps cause hard drive thrashing

Please, that is more or less a useless reply. I believe that I said that the thrashing was under certain conditions and I certainly do not select those conditions! I have a new drive and will clone it soon.....just in case excessive wear has been done, duh.

Without doing the profiles method, how can I easily move say the localfolders/friends email folder data to another system.
