Junk local folder duplicating messages
My junk local folder has 2+ million emails, it seems with time it somehow keeps duplicating (and exponentially) day after day the same message, they only go back as far as March (luckily), the older the message the more duplicates there are.
Already done compacting folder and tried "repair folder", but usually it crashes. Now I've tried deleting the "Junk.msf" file but when starting Thunderbird again it just creates the same database with a couple more tenths of thousands of copies... Of course this amount of duplicates come with around 90GB of disk space and deleting them manually would take days as it becomes slow and sometimes crashes.
Should I just delete both "Junk" and "Junk.msf" folders? Will the "Junk" folder be created again when starting Thunderbird after deleting it?
If this is the right solution, what can cause this to happen, to avoid future message multiplication?

I am not sure what the cause here is, an examination of the relevant file would be required and at 90Gb it is hardly practical. It is probably server side corruption if the account is IMAP.
Deleting the file system folder will remove any local copies of mail completely, but if your issue is server side, as I suspect it will simply repopulate the folder and start the mess again.
I suggest you delete the local folder, and use a web mail to get into the server side folders and empty the server spam folder to cure the problem. Any mail in the folder will be lost obviously.

Thanks Matt, yes I ended up deleting both Junk and Junk.msi, which took only a couple of seconds, restarted PC just in case and everything works smoothly and fast again. As for your suggestion I've checked the server and no junk in there as I have Thunderbird set to move junk to local folder, I also have it set to delete junk after 15 days, I guess it has something to do with it or the index file somehow. I guess I'll just leave some junk for a month and see what happens.
