Firefox on linux - is patching necessary ?

I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop more than a year ago. I have not patched my Linux nor update my Firefox since then. Is it still safe to surf the web with the aged Firefox ? Or is it security disaster ? Thank you.

Linux updates I understand as sometimes changes or something breaks can occur. Had bad experience with certain audio package updates that made it so I could not hear Flash player audio and had to resort to reinstall as a fix several times.

You are taking risks as many of the security fixes since were critical. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/
