My typing is very erratic on 31.4.0 (Win 8.1) - any suggestions on how to fix?

My typing jumps all over in the address and subject lines, as well as the body of emails. Whole lines erase, the cursor jumps lines, a real mess unless I type painfully slow. Any suggestions about the cause or a fix? Thanks!

sounds like a mouse or keyboard with a failing battery.
