Whenever I close a tab, after sometime, I want to open it but when I use Ctrl+Shift+T, Nothing happens. And I usually do need those tabs. It doesn't even show restore previous browsing session. Why aren't those features working? Please help!

I've been having the same problem. To retain my tabs i have to close Firefox via going in to Task Manager, and doing it from there. Only that way does Firefox offer me the session restore tabs after reboot or cold start-up.

I never get my tabs back after a Windows software update or if i accept a new version of Firefox.

I have followed the above instructs, but none of this repairs or explains why i should suffer this problem. Resets do not explain why it happened, just wipe your system and restore your settings back to factory default.

As an aside, when i load a fresh install of Firefox, rarely does it copy over my bookmarks and bookmarks toolbar from IE or Chrome, but am forced to use the Import utility which then doesnt display them properly.

hello Sajo8, either you or one of your extensions has disabled the storing of tabs in the session restore feature. please enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for all custom preferences (=shown in bold) starting with browser.sessionstore - right-click and reset those entries to their default value.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode (Never Remember History).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear the Browsing History

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

No, i tried that and it didn't work.

No, i tried that and it didn't work. Oh, and I did you custom settings for Firefox and for the history, I chose clear all history when Firefox closes, BUT, next to it, on settings, these are the things I have checked- Cookies, Cache, Active Logins, Saved Passwords, Offline Website Data and Site Preferences.

You did check the browser.sessionstore.* prefs on the about:config page and reset user set (bold) prefs to the default value?

Does Firefox create a sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder?

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

Well, I couldn't set

browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo

browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo

and

browser.sessionstore.upgradeBackup.latestBuildID

to default, I had to set the integer value.

If you repeatedly close Firefox by killing the process you are likely to run into problems. It will likely build up multiple session restore files.

To shut down in a orderly manner you should always use the close options from Firefox menus. Those will be under the Firefox button for most users, but may be on a File menu for some such as XP or if you are on a pre-release version such as Fx 29 (Australis) there is a new off button under the new button on the right hand side.

You may need to follow advise in previous posts above regarding the settings. You also need to check for multiple sessionstore files if your settings are correct and Firefox hangs or fails to restore. after crashes or forced closures..

If you get the import wizard when you (re)start Firefox after having updated then there is a problem with the profiles.ini file that is gone.

I have no multiple session restore files. I have gone in to my Profile Folder and i have no sessionstore.js_files. I do, however, havei 1xsessionsstore.bak and 1xsessionsstore.bak-20140314220517

As i said: if i exit-out or use the Firefox\Exit methods though i have set my privacy sessions to remember history when i reopen firefox, there are no tabs there is no sessionrestore. The ONLY way to ensure my browser opens with the session.restore option is to close Firefox using Task manager.

and reading through the advice of all the above, but i can find no explanation as to why my tabs shouldnt restore through closing normally.... ... and why i should lose all tabs and session.restore everytime i accept a software update.

You can check browser.sessionstore.* prefs including browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash on the about:config page and reset browser.sessionstore prefs that are user set (bold) via the right-click context menu to the default value to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.
