Why does Firefox fail to respond when I open it? It fails before I can change or delete my profile
I've happily used Firefox for about a year. Today it couldn't open one of more of my four home page web sites. It couldn't start a new session or restore -- an empty window opens and a Not responding message displays. I have deleted and re-installed. I would change my profile but the software doesn't run.

Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
I tried to open Firefox in safe mode and got the same behavior: the window opens with four unpopulated tabs. When I click somewhere -- like trying to close a tab -- I get the Not Responding message.
I appreciate the suggestion and the the link that made the safe mode test easy to do.
