Sometimes I have many websites open, and Firefox gets blocked. Nothing works any more. I then force Firefox to shut down. BUT when I restart Firefox, it starts restoring the previous session. Same problem as before. I click and click and click on closing, but it keeps opening the different windows of my previous session, and doesn't close any windows. So how to prevent Firefox from restoring the previous session?

You're on 3.6.24, try the "BarTab" extension would reduce normal stuff from all starting at once.

But you have a real problem. I think that if you cancel firefox.exe a second time it doesn't reload, I don't remember the details.

Thank you, I'll try that and get back to report the results. It sounds promising!

Set the Integer pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.

That will allow you to deselect the tab(s) that you do not want to reopen, but will allow to reopen other tabs.

See:

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

  • Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
  • Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
  • Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
  • Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean)

I use add-on Session Manager http://sessionmanager.mozdev.org/

which after a forced shutdown allows various tabs to be deselected before launching Firefox.

It helps to isolate stuck tabs such as long running scripts.

I'm back. I tried the "Bar tab" extension but apart from slowing down firefox it did not do any good. I just had a crash and firefox tried to restore the previous session, and it crashed again. :(

Edit: Now I'll try solution number two. It was difficult (also because my firefox is in swedish and translations are not always accurate), but I managed. I'll get back after the next firefox crash has happened...

The preference names in about:config are the same for all localizations. So browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes will be in English.
