thunder bird keeps crashing and running very slow

Im running windows 8.1, windows defender, windows firewall and malwarebytes. Thunderbird email operates very very slowly when trying to perform any action including reading and writing/sending emails and it sometimes comes to a complete halt. I really like thunderbird when it used to work but now its useless Please help

Your antivirus programs may be part of the trouble.
