how do i engage pop3 polling in my thunderbird its not offered

IMAP IS RUBBISH _WONT USE IT _NEVER HAVE NEVER WILL POP3 for sanity but my newish issue thunderbird doesn't offer pop3 only imap. which i definitely do NOT want. in addition the delete//delete all function seems missing from thiunderbid tool bar now I'm getting real depressed by software changes that wreck sensibility - thuinderbird used to be easy to setup - now its been made almost impossible to use efficiently
