When I choose Delivery Status Notification, nothing happens; what is it supposed to do?

I expect Delivery Status Notification to tell me that a message has reached various stages in delivery and receipt but I can't find any specification of what or how.

Thanks Airmail. It answers a load of questions which I hadn't thought of yet but doesn't cover the simple questions. By experiment, I get a failure reply if I send an e-mail to an invalid address; should I expect anything at all if I send an e-mail to a valid address? Best wishes, DrRGF.
