Clicking on the X to close a web page closes the browser.

Firefox is set as my default browser in Internet Options. OS is Windows XP Pro, SP3. When I close any web page by clicking on the upper right corner X Firefox closes instead of returning me to the home page.

If you click the close X that is part of the minimize, maximize, and close buttons in the top right corner then you close Firefox. You need to click the close X on the tab or alternatively middle-click the tab with the mouse scroll button to only close this tab.

There is a little house icon on the toolbar to navigate the current tab to your home page, in case that's where you want to go.
