Thunderbird seems to be intercepting my multimedia buttons. Why?

I'm running Thunderbird 31.4.0, with Lightning 3.3.3. Recently, the multimedia buttons on my keyboard have stopped having any effect on my music apps. That's not to say they have *no* effect, though; they all focus the Thunderbird window. Nothing else happens within Thunderbird after that. This happens even if - for example - all extensions are disabled, Windows Media Player has focus, and I press the pause/play button.

Has anyone else run into this? Searches with Google and on support.mozilla.org have turned up lots of "my multimedia keys don't work" articles, but none that are specific to Thunderbird.

re: Recently, the multimedia buttons on my keyboard have stopped having any effect on my music apps. I'm not sure how you think this is a Thunderbird issue.

Clearly something is still working because you say one of keys causes focus on the Thunderbird window.

I would suggest that you look for a forum that can answer issues regarding the multimedia keyboard and specifically the make of keyboard you re using. This may be a binding issue.

Alright, my first question ever on support.mozilla.org and I've already gotten the classically-unhelpful "Wrong forum" answer. That's gotta be a record of some kind.

If you'll notice, I didn't say Thunderbird is intercepting my multimedia keys, I said it seems to be intercepting my multimedia keys. I'm only telling you what I'm seeing: with 17 (or whatever) windows, including Windows Media Player, all minimized, pressing any multimedia key focuses Thunderbird. Always Thunderbird. Only Thunderbird. That's why I'm thinking it could be a Thunderbird issue.

It could also be something else, I really don't know. My actual question is "Has anyone else run into this?" If you have not run into this, then your answer is "no," which is a data point, but not particularly helpful.

My system hasn't undergone any recent changes I'm aware of - for example, this isn't a brand-new keyboard - and a week ago the multimedia keys were working fine.

Just because the reponse was not what you wanted to hear does not mean it is classically-unhelpful.

Thunderbird has no means of controlling your multimedia keyboard.

If someone else sees this question and happens to use the same product as you then perhaps they may know more about your keyboard and the key bindings.

I would suggest that it may be helpful to mention what make of multimedia keyboard you use and what Operating System.

It's "classical" because it happens on almost every forum. It's unhelpful because it contains no useful information. Classically unhelpful.

I realize Firefox isn't Thunderbird, but here's an example using Firefox to help illustrate my point: if I try to type in italics by hitting Ctrl-I in this text box right now, Firefox opens a bookmarks window on the left-hand side of the screen. Clearly, Firefox is intercepting the Ctrl-I keypress and redirecting it to do something else.

It's possible Thunderbird is doing something similar, (either by design or accident), that causes my multimedia keys to focus it and do nothing else.

The part that doesn't make sense to me with this theory is why this happens when Thunderbird doesn't already have focus. Applications sometimes intermittently "steal" focus and/or keystrokes from other applications, but this is happening very consistently. Perhaps it is in the keyboard driver/OS/etc. But then why is it always Thunderbird? Why not some other application?

I'm not looking for in-depth, down-in-the-weeds troubleshooting. My question remains: has anyone else seen this behavior?

You have a problem with your Multimedia keyboard. You clearly think it is wrong and classically unhelpful to be advised that a good place to ask question is to look for the appropriate forum for your device.

If you are serious, do as asked and provide the information requested. These two piecess of information are absolutely vital. So I ask again:

  • what make of multimedia keyboard you use
  • what Operating System does your computer use.
