I need to get out of the Beta releases ...88.0b1 (64-bit) ... and back to regular release.

How do I do that and retain all the emails, address books and Enigmail settings?

I have tried starting the beta with "Thunderbird --allow-downgrade" but the version remains the same Beta 88.

God's morrow, Gentlefolk and folkesses. I'm trying to migrate Thunderbird to a new coputer. Horrified to see that the Thunderbird folder was 26 GB, I deleted thousands of old emails, emptied all deleted item folders, deleted all archives, restarted the computer and then went to check on the size of the new "much slimmer" folder.

After deleting masses of unwanted data, the folder size has INCREASED to 33GB!

What to do?

Windows 10 updated automatically and shut off my Thunderbirds access to the server. Now when I try to re-enter my accounts, I have to do it manually as it does not specify IMAP or SMTP.

I have a dozen Gmail accounts, all basically identical. Just a few letters in the username are the difference. I got one of these to work inbound and outbound. I can’t get any of the others to work with Identical account settings and appropriate passwords for the inbound IMAP side of each account. Outbound I am entering in the same account name and password for every new account matching the SMTP settings of the one account that works.

I have closed and restarted Thunderbird, deleted and reinstalled it, nothing works. With all these maneuvers I just lucked out and got one account to work somehow and I cannot replicate it.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

I have been able to move my profiles and Thunderbird is working correctly. However, I cannot find/get my local folders (the TB equivalent of a PST file) to move to my new system so I can still have access to all those save emails and records. I have searched here and cannot find a clear answer on how to get those files moved. Any help (please dub it down a little for me :) is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am a Windows 7 Firefox user. A dying computer is forcing transition to Windows 10. I have used Windows Live Mail 12 for years, and have thousands of emails stored in 4 or 5 accounts on the old computer. The Mail program in Windows 10 will not accept a transfer of my emails and profiles, according to Microsoft Support (Microsoft Sales told me it would, but that's another story). Can I export my emails to Thunderbird and then transfer them to Thunderbird on Windows 10? My only other option appears to be Outlook, and that is the road to Hell. Thank you.

I have a very new PC running WIN10 Pro 64bit ver 21H1. Have downloaded the latest recent version: 78.12.0

One running the exe, it extracts, then reports "Sorry, Thunderbird can'r be installed. This version MS WIN7 x64 or newer..."

Also tried earlier versions 78.10.2 and 72.0b3 with same result, and the .msi versions which just fail but report nothing.

Something clearly very wrong. Had no issues installing Firefox 89.0.2.

Have spent well over an hour fiddling with this, including many reboots.

(I also installed a much earlier version on my WIN XP machine as I wanted to create a TB profile by importing MS Outlook data. I had no problems with this.)

I got a new computer and tried to install thunderbird. I had it installed and tried to import my profile exactly as the online instructions said. I could not open the profile but the file was in the profile folder so I deleted it after 5 tries. Now when I open the program it won't launch because it says : "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it 3 times. I have also gone to the system files and deleted the folder 3 times. None of this nonsense is working and it looks like I'm going to be forced to go to my old computer and forward one hell of a lot of emails or kiss them goodbye. I don't know why they have to make all this crap unnecessarily complicated.

Both computers are Dells running Windows 10. I have moved Thunderbird a number of times over the years. Not an expert but not unfamiliar. I followed the instructions for downloading the Thunderbird folder from the old computer and copying it to the new one.

When I activated Thunderbird, all the accounts were there and 1:1 with the old computer set up. Every thing was fine until I tried to reply to an email. It wouldn't send. Send button is dead.

I have been through the troubleshooting on Support Mozilla. The settings on the SMTP settings on the new computer are identical to the settings on the old computer. I get email from four different servers that I control for my clients. Their status has not changed, and I can't send from any of them.

I also notice that the spell checker is not automatically popping up upon send. I checked Preferences / Composition and "Check spelling before sending" is checked.

The only difference I see is that the old computer ran Thunderbird 91.2.0 (32 bit) and the new computer was running 91.2.0 (64 bit). After troubleshooting, i ran the upgrade to 91.2.1. It still won't send.

Every so often, TB tells there are updates and wants to install them. And then I'm left with a conundrum:

  1. Do I let TB update itself and possibly break some of my extensions jsut so that I can stay current?
  2. Or do I tell TB to f-off and not install the updates because I don't want to deal with the possibility of a bunch of broken crap. And get left behind on an unsupported version of TB which when I am forced to upgrade (or install TB on a new or reinstalled computer, the extensions in my restored profile are all incompatible.

Dammed if I do, Dammed if I don't.

And why do I even need to make such a crappy choice? (Yes, I'm feeling bitchy because I just spent an hour tryin to get my critical extensions (Google Calendar Provider and GContact Sync) working after a TB upgrade that I stupidly let TB foist on me (and it still isn't working).

As far as I can tell, I'm in this situation because: 1) TB developers aren't expected to maintain backwards compatibility 2) TB has chosen not to provide any means for a TB user to check the compatibility of their currently installed extensions with the update that TB is delivering automatically. 3) TB has chosen not to provide any way to revert an update to TB to the state it was in before the update.

This leaves users who don't want to be TB experts stuck because we have to have intimate knowledge of TBs workings to clean up the mess that a TB update can leave us with.

Googling "Thunderbird XXX broke my extensions" or "How can I revert a Thunderbird update?" yeilds lots of hits so I know I am not the only one who keeps running into this.

I have found all sorts of very technical articles on how to fix the situation by reinstalling an older version of TB. But if we are letting TB update itself, most people don't know what version they were on immediately before this last update that broke stuff.

So some suggestions for TB (roughly in order of increasing value): 1) Have a variable somewhere that contains the previous version of TB. 2) Have a command on the Help menu that downloads and reinstalls that version of TB automatically with no technical skills required. 3) Have TB automatically make a backup of it's installation so that it could be reinstalled more easily 4) Have TB install updates by downloading the new version and installing it beside my current install so that if I have any problems, I can run the old version while I wait for updates to the broken extensions. (I've found an article on how to install 2 versions of TB at the same time, so clearly this is doable; why not do it automatically?) 5) Have TB check all my extensions BEFORE installing the update and tell me which ones are incompatible and:

     a) Will have to be updated (automatically) after the update , or
     b) Have no update available yet so just plain won't work after the update

Yes, I know that TB developers are volunteers and I appreciate all the work you do on the product. But really, does a product update process need to be so unpredictable and require so much technical knowledge to recover from? Have we consciously decided that TB should only be used by people technical enough to build it? (Are we only building it for ourselves?)

I have used TB for going on 20 years (well before GMail came out) and much prefer it to competing products like MS Outlook. But I have to admit that this hellish upgrade nightmare has sent me looking for a replacement on several occasions already.

When I upgraded from 60 to 68, I had to get all my add-ons back and some had not been updated to the new format. It took a bit of work and asking help on the forums. Will this happen again if I update to 78, i.e. will my add-ons that worked in 68 no longer be functional?

As a related issue, it appears that 78 is still very much a work in progress. For how long will 68 still be maintained an updated? I like it as is and am in no hurry to upgrade.

Thank you.

Good afternoon

We are experiencing difficulty in trying to install your latest update. We have, in the past, had an automatic update from you last October which has not appeared this time.

We have lost email facility over the last week and would ask your help to resolve this matter. We have been in contact with Plusnet who have been most helpful.

For your advice, when entering the email facility, we have been constantly getting a message coming up in the bottom right hand section of the screen and we wondered whether this was a scam. Please see below.

"start.thunderbird.net uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate has expired. Error code: SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_ISSUER_CERTIFICATE

This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.

Or you can add an exception…"

Please advise.

We await your kind help and looking forward to the latest version of your system to be installed since when trying and pressing the install button, it comes up with a message to say 'install pending'.

Hello! New Thunderbird 91 is out for some time - is there a way to export and later import account settings? I mean email settings (POP, IMAP, SMTP servers, credentials, email aliases, GPG-keys, etc).

Even if there could be find files in profile, that keep these information, at least I knew to backup them, e.g. using cloud sync client. Until Thunderbird gets proper settings export, import built-in feature. This means, that it would be good to export also application settings in next of account settings.

Also Thunderbird program settings would be needed to export, later import.

Backing up whole profile is not possible, as database is updated by every sync and then also cloud client starts syncing. Also Thunderbird profile folder is too big for syncing. There is no point to sync emails, as using IMAP and emails are already in server.
