Thunderbird used to ask me for my password on incoming emails but this has now disappeared and mail is automatically downloaded when I open Thunderbird. How do I re-instate this? I have version 91.10.0 on a Mac and have a POP3 account. I am still asked to enter a password for sending mail and would like to keep this feature.

Migrated now 77yo father a couple years ago from Win XP to Win 11.

He had been using Outlook Express for years, so I may have chosen Thunderbird ESR as replacement. He has the latest version (17.0.9) but it has stopped working due to Gmail's security change (oAuth).

Should I backup his profile, uninstall ESR, then download and install latest TBird version to get working again? Thanksbold text

Hi, Can someone please tell me why my new computer cannot see the Thunderbird Profile folder which I've migrated from my laptop into the correct folder of the new i7 computer. If I take out the default Profile folder and replace with the migrated one, Thunderbird will not open because it says it can't see the Profile folder. However if I put back the default Profile folder then Thunderbird works again. There must be a secret here somewhere! Any help will be much appreciated. BW Clifford

I am currently running the Thunderbird 91.10.0 (32bit) version. I received your email about installing the "102Beta" version, but I cannot find instructions about migrating from 32 to 64 bits. Is a bump-less transfer even possible? Is the 102Beta version 32 or 64 bit?

Hi,

My Problem: After an update Thunderbird does not let me access any functions, and just stays with an "empty" screen (see below)

What happened/lead to the problem? Thunderbird requested to be updated. After the update run, thunderbird was restarted (as requested). This is how it looks after restart (see image 1) Almost none of the functions work.

What might be the cause? From my guess it seems that Thunderbird is still in the mode to complete the update. For some reason it cannot complete the update cycle- As you can see in the second screenshot it still says a restart is necessary. When I click on the button, thunderbird restarts, but still with the same (empty) screen.

System Info: Windows 10 I currently use thunderbird 91.10.0

What I already tried:

  • I already tried to use "safe mode" . But it didn't help either
  • I already tried to uninstall / reinstall thunderbird. But still I get in this endless update cycle.
  • Tried to instal 91.1.0

I recently installed Thunderbird on a new computer.I set it up to use my Yahoo account. It does receive emails sent to Yahoo but will not send. Every time i click SEND it asks for a password and always says it failed.

Under settings, there are 2 servers, IMAP and SMTP. Each has a different password, but at one point I made them the same. It does not matter because the outgoing server keeps changing its password to about 20 random letter and characters. At one point I copied these random characters into the clipboard and posted it in after it asked for a password...and it still FAILS.

I am using version 81.0.19 Until I get this fixed it is useless. An annoying thing is that each time I start Thunderbird, it asks for the password...on my previous pc it remembered it. Both machines are Windows 10. Can anyone help?

I am trying to move Gmail accounts from an old Outlook to Thunderbird due to new OAuth2 rules but can't get the accounts set up in Thunderbird on Windows 10: I installed a fresh copy of 31.8 and Imported emails and address books from Outlook ok. I then installed (upgraded to) 91.10 and tried to set up my existing Gmail account: I type in my gmail username and password and choose POP3 then Done and the Google Credentials window pops up. I enter my email and password and it asks to give Thunderbird access so I choose Allow. The Account Setup screen then says Checking Password and Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password... If I choose Done it just goes in the same loop. If I Configure Manually I can see all the info and pop/smtp servers are correct and using SSL/TLS and OAuth2 but when I try to Get Messages for the account it just pops up the Google Credentials window and after I put in the username/password again no email is downloaded. There is never anything stored in Saved Passwords either so presumably the OAuth2 token is not being saved? I have tried: Reinstalling Thunderbird (including deleting any leftover Thunderbird folders in Programs and User Data) New profile Ensured Cookies are all allowed Added https://accounts.google.com as specifically Allowed exception In my Google account it says Thunderbird IS allowed access (it adds another allow access entry every time I enter the Credentials) Disabled antivirus (Kaspersky) My Gmail username and password are 100% correct - I can log into webmail using them no problem. I have tried to set up 3 different Gmail accounts and all fail with same errors. Hope you can help as I am completely stuck now, thanks

I am moving Thunderbird to a new Windows 11 (64 bit) machine, and downloaded Thunderbird 91.10.0. I used a new profile when I created my two email accounts. But there are several problems: 1) when I exit, Thunderbird doesn't close down completely 2) when I try to look at addons.thunderbird.net or Release Notes from within Thunderbird, the new window never loads (on the other hand, this means that there are no add-ons to confuse the issue) 3) Thunderbird occassionally crashes. I can send you Troubleshooting Information if you need it; it means nothing to me.

The above is the simple version of the problem -- I have been working on this for 2 days, and am no closer to a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

I have done many searches via Google on how to migrate Outlook 2016 Address Book(s) to Thunderbird and have not found one that does the job.

I did find a suggestion to use Thunderbird V31.8.0 to migrate the Outlook Messages & Addresses. This worked; however, then could not find a way to do a clean migration on up to V91.10.01.

Any good solutions (free) that will work?

I have changed from Ubuntu to MX Linux recently and have kept my Thunderbird profile data.

On MX TB 78 is installed.

When I copy the Ubuntu TB profile folder to my new MX install and start Thunderbird I get a message saying that "You have launched an older version of Thunderbird" (which is not the case, I launched versions 78) and that I can either create a new profile or quit the program..... Not very useful.

How can I use/import the data from my previous (Ubuntu) install? It seems likely that I had version 78 on Ubuntu as well, my system was up-to-date, but of course I can't check that anymore.

Thanks

T.

I've been happily using Thunderbird for email for many years. Recently, the gmail OAuth2 requirement has made my POP3 accounts quit working. Currently on 38.5 for Windows 10.

Following various posts, I've tried to convert two specific email accounts to imap, and things are not going well.

My primary email is already imap and works fine. I've tried multiple times to convert the other two, and my current state is I've deleted those two accounts entirely (via Account Actions). When I try to install Existing Account, I eventually get to the point where the server config seems correct, but hitting "Done" results in the above message. I'd be surprised if imap.gmail.com can only support one email address. The emails are named differently, and use different passwords. Imap is enabled via browser based access to both accounts.

Incoming server imap.gmail.com:993 Outgoing smtp.gmail.com:465

I am a long time Thunderbird user. I am moving to a new PC. I used the procedure that you recommend to move Thunderbird (excellent, easy-to-follow), but it only moved one account.

I had one Verizon.net account with another Verizon.net alias to that account. When Verizon switched their email hosting to AOL (they bought both AOL and Yahoo) the alias became the account and the account became the alias. To Thunderbird, it looks like two different accounts.

After the switch, I continued to store emails in the now-alias account folders. When I restored my 23 GB of emails, the alias account folders did not transfer.

Since I stored some vital information in those folders, I need to either (1) copy the folders to my new PC or (2) keep my 11-year-old PC running. What should I do?

I recently had to re-install Kubuntu 20.04 on a laptop. In the process of setting up Thunderbird, the installation process said it had found address books and asked if I wanted to connect them. Sounded like a time-saver, so I said "Yes." What got connected were several completely irrelevant files, most CSV contacts from my cell phone, but the extensive .mab file from the old version of Thunderbird was not there.

I have found some proposed solutions that tell me to

 >> shut down Thunderbird,
 >> rename the abook.sqlite files in my profile folder,
 >> copy to the old abook.mab file (which I have on a backup disk) into my profile folder, and
 >> restart Thunderbird, which will than automatically convert the old .mab file to the new .sqlite format.

That doesn't work. First problem is, I don't have a "profile" folder. I do have a profile.ini FILE which points to two other folders named (approximately) a1b2c3d4.default and z9y8x7w5-default-release (I've changed the exact names, but the name format is as shown).

Second problem is, my a1b2c3d4.default folder (which, in older versions, was where my abook.mab file was found) had no .sqlite files. My z9y8x7w5-default-release folder has several such files but named abook-4.sqlite, abook-16.sqlite, and abook-17.sqlite. They are all shown as 256 KB. When I added the old abook.mab file to that .default-release folder, it did produce an abook.sqlite file, also shown as 256 KB. But the old abook.mab file's content does not appear when I restart Thunderbird and look at the address books. No abook.sqlite file was created in my a1b2c3d4.default folder.

The references I've found so far appear to be for Windows installations, so I'm hoping someone will have suggestions more suitable to the Linux environment.
