All the posts suggest

 Please see https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all/

but that just offers the latest version (current 91.9.1) which won't run on El Capitan.

Other posts tell you to look at

 https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/releases/

but that only gives you the release notes for the older versions, without any download links.

How do you get the older versions?

After a complete hard drive meltdown, I had to re-install windows (10 Pro) and then TB, which is now a blank slate. I have my old profile stored. But in it, my two primary e-mail accounts were POP3 (alongside a number of IMAP accounts) and I was never sure how to switch them to IMAP without having to change the e-mail addresses. And I always quickly moved e-mails out of the inbox into a series of local folders for storage. So pretty much everything I need to reference is in some kind of local folder. So my question is: 1. Is it possible to selectively import local folders from an old TB profile into my newly-installed TB? OR 2. Should I load my old profile and then try to change the two primary accounts to IMAP and can I/how do I do that while keeping the e-mail address? I currently have the new TB on my desktop and the old TB with my profile on my laptop with the "check for new messages" disabled on all accounts. NB I am 60+ and while relatively computer literate for my age, maybe somebody could ... to quote Tom Hanks ... explain it to me like I'm a 3-year-old :0 TIA for any help, Rebecca

Dear TB helpers, I have a migration problem for email messages needing to be transferred please to a new PC. They resided in my previous TB within local folders, i.e., on my old PC.

Having backed them up by copying and pasting the old profile (and all its contents) on to an external HDD, I have also recopied the profile to a desktop folder on the new PC. It has a lot of sbd suffix folders and msf subfolders and many items with a name but no suffix.

The newly installed TB (IMAP method for my gmail address) on the new PC has a different 8-character ID as the default user new profile, i.e., different from the 8-character ID for the TB profile on the old PC.

Can the old email messages be added to the new TB local folders in the new PC under the new profile by following certain simple steps? I would not want to lose these 25 GB of messages as some could be needed for future reference. Just looking for continuity really but do not trust my knowledge of TB.

Regards, Bill 30may22.

Migrated now 77yo father a couple years ago from Win XP to Win 11.

He had been using Outlook Express for years, so I may have chosen Thunderbird ESR as replacement. He has the latest version (17.0.9) but it has stopped working due to Gmail's security change (oAuth).

Should I backup his profile, uninstall ESR, then download and install latest TBird version to get working again? Thanksbold text

Hi, Can someone please tell me why my new computer cannot see the Thunderbird Profile folder which I've migrated from my laptop into the correct folder of the new i7 computer. If I take out the default Profile folder and replace with the migrated one, Thunderbird will not open because it says it can't see the Profile folder. However if I put back the default Profile folder then Thunderbird works again. There must be a secret here somewhere! Any help will be much appreciated. BW Clifford

I have used Eudora for years, about 20 or more. Now I find myself with a dilemma. A secure email program I signed up for must have ports assigned to incoming and outgoing servers. Alas, not possible with Eudora, but possible with Thunderbird.

However, after reading several of the threads of migrating to Thunderbird from Eudora, it appears to be problematic--new addons, missing mailboxes, etc. It's hard to tell whether that's the norm or the exception. One of the threads I read was https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1228297 "Migrate Eudora mail to Thunderbird mail", which suggests starting with Thunderbird 17.0. That thread is from 3-1/2 years ago. Is this still the best way to migrate? Or is one of the Thunderbird migration tools a better and safer option.

I have literally thousands of saved emails and dozens of separate mailboxes and I don't want to lose them.

Hi,

My Problem: After an update Thunderbird does not let me access any functions, and just stays with an "empty" screen (see below)

What happened/lead to the problem? Thunderbird requested to be updated. After the update run, thunderbird was restarted (as requested). This is how it looks after restart (see image 1) Almost none of the functions work.

What might be the cause? From my guess it seems that Thunderbird is still in the mode to complete the update. For some reason it cannot complete the update cycle- As you can see in the second screenshot it still says a restart is necessary. When I click on the button, thunderbird restarts, but still with the same (empty) screen.

System Info: Windows 10 I currently use thunderbird 91.10.0

What I already tried:

  • I already tried to use "safe mode" . But it didn't help either
  • I already tried to uninstall / reinstall thunderbird. But still I get in this endless update cycle.
  • Tried to instal 91.1.0

I recently installed Thunderbird on a new computer.I set it up to use my Yahoo account. It does receive emails sent to Yahoo but will not send. Every time i click SEND it asks for a password and always says it failed.

Under settings, there are 2 servers, IMAP and SMTP. Each has a different password, but at one point I made them the same. It does not matter because the outgoing server keeps changing its password to about 20 random letter and characters. At one point I copied these random characters into the clipboard and posted it in after it asked for a password...and it still FAILS.

I am using version 81.0.19 Until I get this fixed it is useless. An annoying thing is that each time I start Thunderbird, it asks for the password...on my previous pc it remembered it. Both machines are Windows 10. Can anyone help?

I am trying to move Gmail accounts from an old Outlook to Thunderbird due to new OAuth2 rules but can't get the accounts set up in Thunderbird on Windows 10: I installed a fresh copy of 31.8 and Imported emails and address books from Outlook ok. I then installed (upgraded to) 91.10 and tried to set up my existing Gmail account: I type in my gmail username and password and choose POP3 then Done and the Google Credentials window pops up. I enter my email and password and it asks to give Thunderbird access so I choose Allow. The Account Setup screen then says Checking Password and Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password... If I choose Done it just goes in the same loop. If I Configure Manually I can see all the info and pop/smtp servers are correct and using SSL/TLS and OAuth2 but when I try to Get Messages for the account it just pops up the Google Credentials window and after I put in the username/password again no email is downloaded. There is never anything stored in Saved Passwords either so presumably the OAuth2 token is not being saved? I have tried: Reinstalling Thunderbird (including deleting any leftover Thunderbird folders in Programs and User Data) New profile Ensured Cookies are all allowed Added https://accounts.google.com as specifically Allowed exception In my Google account it says Thunderbird IS allowed access (it adds another allow access entry every time I enter the Credentials) Disabled antivirus (Kaspersky) My Gmail username and password are 100% correct - I can log into webmail using them no problem. I have tried to set up 3 different Gmail accounts and all fail with same errors. Hope you can help as I am completely stuck now, thanks

I am moving Thunderbird to a new Windows 11 (64 bit) machine, and downloaded Thunderbird 91.10.0. I used a new profile when I created my two email accounts. But there are several problems: 1) when I exit, Thunderbird doesn't close down completely 2) when I try to look at addons.thunderbird.net or Release Notes from within Thunderbird, the new window never loads (on the other hand, this means that there are no add-ons to confuse the issue) 3) Thunderbird occassionally crashes. I can send you Troubleshooting Information if you need it; it means nothing to me.

The above is the simple version of the problem -- I have been working on this for 2 days, and am no closer to a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

I have done many searches via Google on how to migrate Outlook 2016 Address Book(s) to Thunderbird and have not found one that does the job.

I did find a suggestion to use Thunderbird V31.8.0 to migrate the Outlook Messages & Addresses. This worked; however, then could not find a way to do a clean migration on up to V91.10.01.

Any good solutions (free) that will work?

I have changed from Ubuntu to MX Linux recently and have kept my Thunderbird profile data.

On MX TB 78 is installed.

When I copy the Ubuntu TB profile folder to my new MX install and start Thunderbird I get a message saying that "You have launched an older version of Thunderbird" (which is not the case, I launched versions 78) and that I can either create a new profile or quit the program..... Not very useful.

How can I use/import the data from my previous (Ubuntu) install? It seems likely that I had version 78 on Ubuntu as well, my system was up-to-date, but of course I can't check that anymore.

Thanks

T.
