TB 91.7.0 (64-bit I used to send/rcv gmail no problm, started having issues ~ Oct 2021 I then setup a 3rd party app password in gmail account for thunderbird. That allowed me to Send Gmails, but, not receive it kept asking for password. Then I read to use OAuth2 and saw that Google will no longer allow 3rd party app passwords, so i deleted it in google, and set both Imap.gmail.com and smpt.gmail.com to use OAuth2 (both set for SSL/TSL). I did this just for smpt first when the 3rd party app password was still enabled, i could recv but, when i went to send, it would ask for password, i enter it, then it would sent msg to my cell phone to Allow thunderbird, i would press Allow on my phone, and Thunderbird would come up with Sending message.. with the progress marked all way to end BUT, it will never complete sending.... I have to hit cancel it then shows Failed message unable to authenticate. After I deleted the 3rd party app password in gmail settings, now when i start thunderbird or try to receive emails, it goes through the same authorization process with my phone, but, then never downloads any new emails. I have spend HOURS on this.. extremely frustrated (I have been forced to us ms mail which i really don't like, i am too used to thunderbird (although I wished thunderbird had check boxes on emails to select via checkboxes for delete, or moving, etc)

For weeks, I have been searching everywhere for a definitive method for transferring my Thunderbird 91.8.1 profile to a new PC. There are lots of posts mainly covering windows applications and older versions of Thunderbird. One reoccurring problem seems to be that some installations have 2 profiles. Some have a profile with just a xxxxxxxx.default profile and others have a xxxxxxxx.default-release and a xxxxxxxx.default profile. It would appear that if you have the 2 profiles then the .default-release would be the one you would use for transferring to a new PC. I was wondering if some one could lead me to a current definitive procedure, for transferring a Linux based Thunderbird 91.8.1 profile, from one PC to new Linux PC . What to do if you have the 2 profiles? Can you just delete the yyyyyyyy.default profile?

Perhaps some one could comment on the following procedure that I have cobbled together from the myriad of posts that I have read.

THIS IS MY VERSION (UNPROVEN) Transfer Thunderbird (91.8.1) profile to new PC [v_4]

On your SOURCE computer [Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.3]

       1. Connect a device for data transfer, either a USB flash drive, or a USB SSD/HDD drive.
       2. Open the Home directory and click the “View tab” then check the box “Show Hidden Files”.

       3. You should find a directory called .thunderbird.
       4. Open .thunderbird and look for the folder, xxxxxxxx.default-release. Note; the x represents a string of 8 random alpha/numerical text.
       5. Right-click on the xxxxxxxx.default-release folder and select Copy.
       6. Paste a copy of xxxxxxxx.default-release to your transfer device. Remove it safely from the source computer when done.
       7. Uncheck the “Show Hidden Files” tab that you checked in step 2.

Note: a) These steps can also be used to create a backup of your Thunderbird profile folder.

         b) In step 4, you may not find a default-release folder. You may see a xxxxxxxx.default or
both. Choose the one that is active.

On your DESTINATION computer [Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.3]

       1. Open thunderbird and then close it. A new profile will be created yyyyyyyy.default-release, or .yyyyyyyy.default.
       2. Locate and open the backed-up profile folder, xxxxxxxx.default-release.
       3. Select all of the folder contents and choose Copy.
       4. Locate and open the new profile folder, yyyyyyyy.default-release.
       5. Paste the contents of the backed up profile folder into the new profile folder. Choose to overwrite existing files of the same name.
       6. Start Thunderbird.

This morning I clicked the button to download my latest e-mails. As they hit the In Box all the messages already there just disappeared! Gone! Not in In Box, not in Trash, not anywhere! Some of them were important business messages requiring a reply. This is a disaster!

Is there any way to recover these lost messages?

Is there any way to prevent this from happening again, short of abandoning Thunderbird and finding a new e-mail program?

I have been using Thunderbird for a couple weeks now, and today is the first time this happened.

In a world where respondent's often draft messages about a new subject by lazily replying to messages on an old subject, does anyone find Threading helpful? Why is it now the default.

After View/Sort by/Unthreaded then propagating that by "apply current view to all folders." All folders do in fact sort by unthreaded. But if I create a new subfolder it defaults to sort by threaded. Please, is there anyway to entirely disable Threading?

Some time ago, Thunderbird changed the whole organization of the email presentation. I am a long-time Thunderbird user who is used to the old screen and organization and I want to find out how I can get the old screen and organization back. I've attached a screenshot so you can see which version of Thunderbird is causing me so much trouble. Why change the traditional top-of-the-screen menu: (File, View,Tools, Help)? It was so logical and so easy. The movable mish-mash that exists now is driving me crazy.

For instance, I used an app under Tools that presorted certain emails and routed them to assigned folders. Not only has the sorting gone wrong, I haven't got the faintest idea where the app is? The emails that were once successfully sorted and rerouted are not working. And they're turning up as read in random folders.

Firefox also changes things that don't need to be changed, but my experience there is that an add-on or extenstion soon turns up that restores the features that users like.

In my preliminary search on my problem, there was not one article. In fact, my search came back with the message that no article appeared to match my query. I guess I must be the only person that is not happy with this interface.

Is there a way I can get the old version back? I'm sorry if I seem grouchy, but I am 83 and not being able to find what I need and what I used to have makes me a tad tetchy.

I have used thunderbird for years but now cant send emails from one of my outlook accounts with error Login to server smtp.office365.com with username xxxxxxx@xxxx failed. I had activity message from microsoft the other day that included something in the US so I changed my account password. Since that I keep getting the above message and it will not accept the new password. I have deleted the account and re-installed it, changed the SMTP settings and port, closed and re-opened thunderbird and re-booted the computer but cannot send a message from the account. I can still send messages from my other microsoft accounts

Getting a popup now every time Thunderbird tries to sign into gmail. It says "Sign in with your Google Account" but nothing works when I put in my id or email. There's no response. T-bird is set up properly and uses oauth2; this just began happening. Less secure apps is on but that's being stopped, so looks like I won't be able to use gmail anymore.

I tried deleting my gmail a/c and now I can't create one. I can't get past that "credentials needed" popup.

How can I get T-bird to work with gmail?

Google has announced that after May 30, 2022 third-party apps that log into google with account name and password (which I assume includes Thunderbird) will no longer be able to do so, as they will enable 2-step verification. I currently and for years have used Thunderbird to pick up my mail from 5 accounts, 3 of which are gmail accounts. Will I be able to continue using Thunderbird after May 30, 2022? I have been unsuccessful getting any helpful information from google itself. They don't have a list of "trusted" third party apps that will continue to work with them. Anything people know about this will be helpful to me and appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I have recently changed my Host and in the process of trying to reconfigure my server details for my new mail account I accidentally removed my account, thereby losing all mails and folders including my customer database, which leaves me feeling bereft.

Looking at similar questions it seems that it is possible to restore the lost mails and folders but unfortunately I am not that savy with this stuff and find it all rather difficult and scary.

Are there any step by step instructions on how I can restore my account or simply get access to my lost mails and folders ?

Thank you very much for any assistance.

The "ImapMail" folder (within the Thunderbird folder) weighs 23,4Go and [Gmail].sbd : 22,8Go while my mails on my gmail web-page only weigh 2,85 Go. There must be something I have to erase somewhere, thanks for your help.

Thunderbird now uses SQLITE data base files for Address Books. I'd like to copy an address book to another computer for use with Thunderbird there. How does Thunderbird recognize that a given SQLITE file is an address book? Is it solely based upon the file name (to the left of the .SQLITE porition of the name) beginning with the string "abook"? Is there something else in some configuration file that maintains this notion? Are there multiple files associated with a given address book? For example, I see these files in my profile directory: abook.sqlite abook.sqlite-shm abook.sqlite-wal So, I'm guessing the answer to that last question is Yes.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Hiya, Thunderbird has been working great, up until today when there was an automatic update. First I knew was when Thunderbird said it needed to restart. Since then it has not worked properly. It has updated itself to version 102.0.3 . I am getting two errors;

Error 1. It says xx messages downloaded but they are not showing anywhere.

Error 2. The account is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages.

If I restart Thunderbird, I at least get rid of error 2 for a while anyway and it does send and receive just cannot view said messages.

Any help appreciated. Greg
