This seems to be an old problem but nobody else has reported this in Thunderbird 78.2.2 as far as I can see. Trying to do MailMerge, which I have used literally hundreds of times in earlier versions, I put {{Email}} (or whatever) in the To: field, and it says:

No recipients were specified. Please enter a recipient or newsgroup in the addressing area.

This is obviously nonsense - the whole point is that MailMerge INSERTS the email addresses. If this can't be fixed, Thunderbird will be useless to me.

So, I just upgraded to version 78.1 and I just hate the way it looks. The old folders used to be yellow and distinct. The new folders are white with a blue outline of the same color as the rest of the theme. I hate that. It all just looks the same, as if they are trying to hide everything with the same color. This may be the "Modern Trend" but I hate the modern trend. I like things to stay the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Is there a way to get the old look back? I looked through the addon themes, but there are only three that are compatible with my version and they are all crazy stuff that I hate worst than the new default theme.

Greetings,

Happy memorial day from our family to yours! Let us remember those courageously gave their lives. I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird for more than a decade, on multiple Operating Systems, and this is my first post in this great community. Overall, long time Mozilla user and a fan!

Goal:

My objective is to keep only last N days of emails in order to save disk space. I would like to set up 2 gmail accounts.

Expected Behavior:

Right after setting up the email account, if I change settings from Synchronization & Storage page to download emails from only most recent N days, Thunderbird should respect that setting. Most importantly, this setting should only limit the scope of downloading emails, and under any circumstances, should not delete emails on the remote server.

Actual Behavior:

Right after setting up the email account, Thunderbird aggressively starts downloading emails regardless its size or age. If I change settings to sync most recent N days, I still see old emails. These old emails do not away - even after restating the application or even restating the computer. After referring to another post on this forum I also tried using 'Compact folder' option followed by restating the application. It did not seem to do the trick.

The question:

Given the above, I am wondering, somehow - if I changed Thunderbird's default Synchronization & Storage settings to download only most recent N days' emails, would it help me achieve my goal? If it would, I would like to know how.

FWIW - I might be using Mozilla Thunderbird 68.8.1 (32-bit) portable, in Windows 7.

P.S. : I am open to any approach that helps me achieve my goal.

Hi,

I am trying to import my MBOX-Archives (Apple Mail) to Thunderbird 78.6.0 on Win10. I did the following steps:

1) downloaded and added the recommended Addon "ImportExport NG" 2) right-clicked on "Local folder" 3) opened menu "ImportExportTools NG" 4) chose "import mbox files" 5) chose a directory to search for mbox files to import (including subdirectories) 6) chose the directory on my HD containing all mbox-file (shown as mbox-directories in Win10)

then: nothing!

I also tried all other options in the dialog. But not success. Any hints greatly appreciated!

I use Firefox as my main browser. In the past when I clicked on links in Thunderbird's RSS reader it opened those links in Firefox.

Recently I also installed Chromium. I did not set Chromium as the default system browser. But now, whenever I click on a link in Thunderbird's feed reader it opens up Chromium*.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm using Arch GNU/Linux.

  • - Yes I have got it the right way around! I could understand it if Thunderbird always opens Firefox despite settings. But that's not what's happening, Thunderbird is always opening Chromium.

The background color on the screen for composing a message is black, and the text is red. This happens for when using "Write" to open the composing screen, or using a template to compose. Even though the background and text during composition is black and red, respectively, the sent message is on a white background with black text. I would like the screen for composing the message to also be white text with black background and for those to be the default colors. Thank you.

I am having a problem with the folder location settings for saving attachments.

If I navigate to a folder I can save the first file. However, for the second file, the location then "reverts" to whichever location I was using when saving an attachment from a message previously (not a fixed location, just whichever folder i was using then).

What might generate this behavior, and how can I prevent the location from "reverting"?

Apologies if this turns out to be a dupe...can't find any evidence that this was posted.

I need to move my filters from Thunderbird to procmail, but first, I need to know how to export them (e.g., to a CSV file) in Thunderbird 68.8.0. There used to be a extension for that...not sure what happened to it, but it apparently doesn't exist anymore. So, without that extension, do I export filters? I'm running tbird on Windows 10 Home, if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Considering how un-userfriendly the Thunderbird 78 folder pane is and how all add-ons which could help fix that have been made obsolete by the change of add-on interface, does any one know how to change the icon picture for mail folders in Thunderbird 78? I have started reading the add-on documentation, but I cannot find anywhere a document giving the list of names for the various images used in Thuderbird (i.e. the image names I could use in the manifest.js file of a very basic add-on which would just change the icons). Is one supposed to guess and work by trial and error, or is there a document, somewhere, which lists these names?

Thanks in advance to anyone who:

  • either points me towards a document listing the image names that can be used in the manifest.js file
  • or points me towards a tool or method to change the folder icons in Thunderbird 78 (and, yes, ColoredFolders is not [yet?] compatible with Thunderbird 78)

Mega thanks in advance. Dominique

I just upgraded to 78.3.2, and the message list panel now has significantly more spacing, less denstiy. There is more whitespace between lines. And there does not appear to be any option to reset this back to the previous compact view?

EDIT: Adding a note about an additional issue with the message list panel that is discussed in this thread... Prior to v78.3.2, a message/line in the message list pane would not become highlighted until I *clicked* on it. Now, whenever I just pass my mouse over the list, the message under the mouse becomes highlighted (and the last message(s) *selected* also remains highlighted). This results in two or more non-adjacent messages being highlighted in the same way at the same time. This is a poor usability experience and dangerous design that has caused me to perform operations on unintended messages multiple times, even nearly accidentally deleting messages. This usability degradation creates a risk of data loss.

Hi, I'm trying to help a friend move her email account to another provider. I've been able to pull all her old web mail messages down from the old host and into Thunderbird, but I can't seem to export the inbox to a mbox file so I can import it into Horde on another host (she wants to use webmail directly, not through a program).

My export attempts are resulting in an inbox file but it's a blank file type (File) and the import seems to work on Horde but then there are no messages imported. I can import/export messages one at a time but that's not a sane solution.

I've tried to set up ImportExportTools NG to export folders as Mbox file but I don't end up with an Mbox file anywhere that imports into Horde.

Help please, and thanks!

I am using Thunderbird 91.0b3 (64-bit) on Linux Mint 20.1 running XFCE 4.14.3

I am trying to set TB to open a PDF attachment in the external system viewer Xreader.

I have tried the following:-

1) edited the mimeTypes.rdf file with the correct lines for a PDF (https://termbin.com/qwpf).

2) deleted the mimeTypes.rdf file and tried to set it in Preferences.

3) edited user.js

In Firefox there is a well documented way (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/view-pdf-files-firefox) to set this up but I could not find the same for Thunderbird... why not?

Which magic file is it??

Is it mimeTypes.rdf or user.js or handlers.json ?!

Hope anyone can help.

Hello Emails in the Inbox (and other folders) are no longer highlighted when selected. There is a faint highlight when running the mouse across the email list but when I select an email, the highlight disappears after I move the mouse.

Also, new inbox emails appear blank until one selects an email. The subject text in the inbox has a white font on a white background. There is a yellow star to the left. When I touch the email with the mouse, the text colour changes to black and the yellow star disappears.

Also, if I select a folder but not select any emails, the lower part of the right-hand pane is black instead of white.

Not too happy about these changes. There is nothing to show how to reset them.

There are too many changes happening all at the same time.

Hi,

I love TB and was so happy to see 78 it is a perfect email app so that is clear. Thanks for it and all the efforts. First thing after update for me was to check if I can remove some of the drive me nuts keyboard shortcuts.

Why? They drive my nuts. Typically when I use search field - sometimes I miss-click, or the app was not active, and I start typing what I am looking for and guess what... threads go to junk or are red, archived...depending on the key I press. Even though I touch type still I am too fast :)

Any chance to give a freedom to change it so I can love it even more? There was an add-on but for older versions :( Maybe someone has solution.

Thanks, WH
