GMail security changes coming soon, affects access to POP and SMTP

I have been using Thunderbird for several years for my GMail accounts, and have always preferred to download my messages using the POP and SMTP protocols, rather than use the IMAP protocol which leaves them all on the web. Google now inform me that "To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using Sign in with Google or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0. What do you need to do? Email software, like Outlook 2016 or earlier, has less secure access to your Gmail. Switch to Office 365, Outlook 2019 or newer, or any other email software where you can sign in using Sign in with Google." These changes are due to take effect from May 30th. How can I prepare for them and still use the POP and SMTP protocols after that date? Is OAuth 2.0 appropriate?

Hello,

I am learning to look at websites with help of the development tools and the inspector tab and I am trying to get into how the web works and how the different programming languages interact and so forth. When moving the mouse over parts of the website, the relating code is highlighted in the inspector tab. I am having an issue as follows:

The first image shows a part of the website code. The mouse cursor is on no specific position, I marked its position with a blue arrow.

In the second image the mouse is over the red "free options" button and in the inspector tab a div appears out of nowhere. It does not appear in the code unless the mouse is moved over the button and disappears as soon as the mouse leaves the button. I have never seen that before (maybe because I am a beginner) and have no clue what happens there.

Is that done with javascript? Or with php? Or with css? Or anything else? What happens there and how can the actual code change?

In the inventor tab, does the code have to do with the DOM rather then the sourcecode of the website is that right?

Please give me some light =)

I updated Firefox today to 100.1.1. My previous version may have been a year old. "Top Sites" on the homepage has disappeared. I can still choose "Add to top sites" from the menu, but cannot see the results of those taps, old sites or newly added sites. The rest of my bookmarks are intact...assuming there is any connection between the two. Is there a low level trick to bring them back, or is this a bug?

I noticed a very similar thread from 2020, but with no resolution:

Had Firefox update a few days ago, which resulted in the Firefox icon now showing as a stenciled square with a bold PDF written across it. Raised this with community and abuse yesterday and two days prior to that but the only answer I got was to understandably show eveidence of the new icon. But having captured an image, it seems the "add image" is unable to dispaly the image. This info was also transmitted in my responses but with no reply from Firefox or the firefox community. Surely Firefox has the means to ensure they receive the image to evidence the problem I have. Email might ensure I can transmit an image. Equally Firefox doesn't seem to respond after a website has been found and I explore the site for additional information (eg shopping sites) but hwen I try to go back to the previous page of that website the previous page option doesn't work. Right now I don't know what version of Firefox has been updated or whether it is 100% genuine. As a matter of urgency could you please contact me to resolve my concerns.

I don't understand the article about "Automatic Conversion of Google mail accounts to Oauth2 authentication.

As a gmail POP3 email account user does this mean if I am on Thunderbird 91.8 (or 91.9) I need do nothing about getting an App password from Gmail and when Google forces 2SV upon me Thunderbird will automatically cope with this ? We were told gmail/Google would not accept/allow/permit Oauth2 authentication for POP3 (and therefore we would have to use an App password). Has Thunderbird found a way to deal with this ?

If not and I have to have an App password, can I just edit passwords in Saved Passwords (Password Manager) to insert the App password instead - and will this automatically then be saved; or do I have to delete the passwords, then go through the Get New Mail (and subsequently the Write & Send) to insert the App password and remember to check "save it in passwords" or "use password manager" to get it into the Saved Passwords ? (I get conflicting answers when I search for advice)

Thank you

The image which may be attached belongs to a different question "Thunderbird & icons" but I have been unable to to delete it from here.

For some reason, when I try to autofill with stored credit card information, Firefox (99.0.1) fills the form with credit card number and expiration date when I mouse over a credit card choice, and then when I actually make the choice, the entry gets erased.

I have checked, per an earlier (now archived) question, and there is no "autocomplete off" (or any mention of "autocomplete") in the web page in question.

In KDE 5.24.4, Linux. I started to have some issues with "Open containing folder" probably because I installed many Gnome apps which may cause bad configurations in my system.

I suspect this cause this issue even though I don't really have gnome file manager:

https://polywogsys.livejournal.com/309405.html "Gnome based file managers, Nemo/Caja/Nautilus provide the entry org.freedesktop.FileManager1. So it doesn't matter what you set as your default application for the filemanager mimetype - as per the freedesktop.org standard, firefox will always select a filemanager based on dbus (if it's there)"

But because the mimetype points to "dolphin", I dont really have other explanation either: $ xdg-mime query default inode/directory org.kde.dolphin.desktop

Hello,

I tried to find the answer, but could only find info regarding IMAP, and not about POP3.

At the moment I have my home computer configured to use POP3 and leave a copy of the emails on the server, so I can also access them from my phone, which is configured to use IMAP. Thunderbird on my home computer is configured to delete mails on the server when I delete them in Thunderbird, this works properly.

To reduce the size of my inbox I moved, by drag-and-drop, E-mails from my inbox to folders which I created under "local folders" and as they disappears from my "local" inbox I was under the impression they where also removed from the server. Now I found out that all these mails are still visible when I use Webmail, so they are not deleted from the server at all, just not visible in my inbox in Thunderbird. Is there a way to configure Thunderbird, with POP3, to have mails deleted from the server once I move them to local folders?

From what I read so far, "archive" and local folders is more or less the same, only "archive" can be automated and moving them to local folders I have to do manual. Is this correct?

During my search I also found out that when using IMAP it`s also possible to "Keep messages for this account on this computer", so to have them available offline as well. If above option with POP3 (to have them delete from the server once moved to a local folder) is not possible, I might change to IMAP completely. In that way when I move messages to local folders they will for sure be removed from the server. The reason I never changed to IMAP was that I wanted to have local copies of my E-mails and could back-up them. But now I read, and think, this will also be possible with IMAP and "keep messages on this computer"

Best regards, Jasper

Dear T-Bird

About Release Versions

On T-Bird I receive an email which contains links. Normally these activate and transfer to the link site when clicked. This no longer works!

This is a pain in the proverbial.

Also with your celebrated Firefox 100 - the links in text don't work either when clicked I have to copy the links and paste to the url box to move to the link site.

Look every thing was working fine 3 days ago - I have done absolutely nothing to my laptop.

I think Mozilla reliability is simply getting worse .

When things are working well - you need more checking before an upgrade .

I was on Beta release last year - my experience with beta was dreadful - cost me 1.5 months of work.

I want to go back to the previous Release version of Firefox and T-bird - how to do this easily.

I am going to shutdown automatic updating as you cannot get things right it seems.

I am a former Netscape user

Best

You actually have an egregious error in your install procedure/program. 1) you fail to tell folks/warn them close down i) FF when installing the update and/or ii) save and delete all open sites in the FF being upgraded. 2) there is a failure to TELL us reboot FF after the install.

Doing research and writing all day long as I do, I actually hold a number of reference sites open in FF as I work.

My friend who happens to understand all this computer stuff tells me that the open sites on my FF is what impeded the successful install . . . .

The other grumble I have with you-all is that it has taken me too much time to try and find a way to respond to you with the information needed to solve this problem for the FF community . . . .

I am a paying/donator to FF . . . and I must tell you I am beyond disappointed by all this dropped ball on sensible communications practice!
