Is this about Firefox on a desktop computer because you posted with a Windows 8.1 computer?

Do you want to suppress the names on the Bookmarks Toolbar and only keep the icons or only shorten the names?

To shorten names you can edit them via the right-click context menu (Properties) or in the pane at the bottom right in the Bookmarks Manager (Library; Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks).
