How can I add an OpenSearch provider directly from a web site containing a <link rel=search> link?

Many search engines offer an OpenSearch compatible search plugin, which is advertised through a link rel=search link in the header of the start page. On such pages, the search engine can be easily added to the search bar on the desktop version of firefox and just as easily be set as default search provider. On the mobile edition, I cannot see a similar functionality anywhere.
