I can't figure out how to get the status bar (which has always been at the bottom of my Firefox screen). I've checked the advanced Java settings, but still can't get it back.

The Status Bar is gone as of 4.0b7, it was replaced by the Add-on Bar. If you want the three basic functions that the Statue Bar provided, try the Status-4-Evar extension which allows you to add those functions to the Add-on Bar.
