If I go to Firefox will I still be able to open attachments or files as with IE? I am tired of being put off the web by IE. As it is now I cannot always open attachments.

You should be able to do anything that IE can do.

I suggest you upgrade to a newer version of Firefox: yours is rather old and insecure

Help > Check for updates

And do not delete IE. You must use it to receive/download any and all updates for Windows and other MS software. MS has it set that you can not use any other browser.

Menu: Help > Check for Updates

Afterwards you can set Firefox to check Automatically
Tools > Options > Advanced > Update
