As I've said in the question, I've asked this before with little to no results.

The search engine bar keeps returning no matter how many times I remove it, uninstall all of my addons, or edit the Files in the Firefox folder as per instructions given here:[ https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/760219]

I don't want this bar there, it keeps resetting my customized settings. :| How can I permanently make this nuisance disappear?

There is a little arrow on the right of the Wikipedia icon... click that and scroll down to "Manage Search Engines". You can either move it up, change whether it is default or remove it all together.

That should work.

To get rid of this Search Bar from your Firefox just do the following:

Click View > Toolbars > Customize > (Then) Drag The Search Bar To The Dialog. This will get rid of the Search Bar on your Firefox window.

Thanks For Choosing Firefox, Scott

It won't let me remove it. :| As you can see in the screen shot included below even when I have that selected the 'Remove' button remains greyed out and I am unable to remove it.

Of course, this is also one of the very first things I've tried.

Any other ideas? I'm getting a bit frustrated with this since nothing works correctly. ><

@Splunkett: That does not work. :| Really, it doesn't. I've done that umpteenth times this week and every time I turn my computer on and click on Firefox there it is. Sometimes all I need to do is go a few hours without using Firefox (while my computer is on) then open a Firefox page and it will be there again.

If it was that simple I wouldn't be here, this is a Firefox error.

Ok, here are you options if you want a search bar but don't want Wiki

1. Click "manage search engines" 2. Click "restore defaults" 3. Select a different provider

If you don't want a search bar period, do as follows.

1. Right click in the area where the search bar is, you will get a menu. 2. Select customize. 3. Simply click the search bar and drag it back to the menu.

Should solve your problem. If not, I'm out of ideas, lol.

P.S. - Having a search bar may simply be a firefox default, something in the source. Just might be stuck with it for now.

No, I don't want the bar at all. >< I want the whole thing gone but I don't understand why it won't let me remove it or stay removed when I do. It keeps coming back like a bad stain. lol D:

And having this as a default but being unable to remove it is ridiculous. :/

Is there a way I can file a complaint to the Mozilla company? Yes, it really does bother me. lol It sucks that even when I do customize Firefox so that I squish the Search Bar into a corner when I open up a new Firefox page after having not used it for a while will cause it to reset my customization and the Search Bar is back with maximum length and my buttons aren't where I had put them.

I even checked some of the advanced Firefox settings in about:config, and there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of it permanently.

Your last option would be to re-install Firefox and attempt the same fixes mentioned above, it might just help if it was a clean install. Then again, if you have customized themes and things set just the way you like, that could be a royal PITA.

I would recommend sending your complaint here http://hendrix.mozilla.org/

Sorry I couldn't help more.

BlackJill - the problem is with your installation. Did you do what Cor-el recommended in that other thread, as far as deleting the localstore.rdf file? That file is what holds the information about changes you made to the user inteface (UI), and sometimes "resetting" all your modifications might be necessary to get a fresh start. If the Search bar continues to reappear after a Firefox restart when you "hid" it in the Customize Palette, something you have installed keeps corrupting the localstore.rdf file.

Have you tried using the Default Theme, to see if that particular problem with the Search bar not staying hidden in the Palette is related to the Theme you are using?

JJNYS - There is no preference for permanently hiding it in about:config, the Search bar should stay hidden in the Palette when it is moved there. When it keeps reappearing there is a problem with the localstore.rdf file, and the user has to do some troubleshooting to find out what is causing that repeated corruption. Anything that alters the UI is suspect - themes, userChrome.css mods, extensions, etc. Re-installing Firefox rarely fixes problems like this, unless the user deletes their "user customizations and personal data" when they uninstall Firefox. IMO, that's silly - they need to find out what's causing the problem or it will probably reoccur when install the same stuff and do the same customization to the new Profile.

Yes, I've tried everything Cor-el mentioned to do and if you look at that thread again, you will see I added another reply that says that it didn't work at the bottom. :|

I don't use themes, I use Personas. Do Personas come with a Search Bar? That's sounds a bit weird...But I will try it.

@JJNYS: Thanks for having tried to help. :)

BlackJill, not to get off topic, but what theme are you using in XP, it's pretty sweet.

the-edmeister: As you can see with the screenshot I've included below I removed my Persona, and you can see that I am not using themes. When I uninstalled it I removed the Search Bar using the customization then closed Firefox, when I reopened it the bar was back, and my entire customization was reset, once again.

As far as what is corrupting the localstore-rdf file, I've no idea what it could be or where to start looking. :| If you look at my system details it will list all of the plugins, extensions and what not that I have currently installed.

Got any other ideas of what it might be? Sorry, but I know next to nothing about this kind of stuff.

JJNYS: Lol xD It's the Windowblind called MRX4 Reloaded found here: http://www.wincustomize.com/explore/windowblinds/7141/

One thing I am curious about in this screenshot - http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t254/MasakoTomoe/untitled-2.jpg - is how the Titlebar text (and the Menubar items) are getting centered? I see that happening in the other screenshot you posted where your are showing the Themes panel showing only the Default Theme. If that is being done by the Windows theme you have installed, maybe that Windows theme is contributing yo your Toolbar problem? Have you tried disabling that Windows theme?

Firefox 4.0b7 should be released this week, so why don't you wait until then to see if the new version fixes that problem with the Search bar not staying in the Palette after you put it there.

I don't use the Firefox 4.0 beta releases myself, but with the Nightly trunk betas of 4.0 I use, I've never had a problem like that with Toolbar Customizations getting reset.

more options

The menu items are centered because I center them using the customization and the title bar text is that way because of the theme I use, correct.

But what is not correct is that it is being caused by my theme or the Windowblinds because A) I rotate themes weekly, sometimes even daily, depending on my mood. So I am always changing them constantly and this problem has been persistent for quite some time, several months at the very least. B) Because the version of Windowblinds I'm using is trial (for now til I buy it when I stop being lazy lol) I don't always have it installed, and this problem was present not only when I use Windowblinds, but also when I use DesktopX Thems and Alienware themes. :| It's quite...persistent, to say the least.

Edit: Just to test your theory because I don't like leaving any stone unturned, I will use a different Windowblind theme for the next few days and see if it happens again. I will do the same with different themes to see if I get the same results.

Helper7677: Pardon me for my rudeness but we've already covered that. :| The images I post are not to show how to remove the bar/search engines, but to show that after I've tried the things that have been suggested to show that even after having done so the bar is still there. So what you said makes no sense and makes me think you didn't read anything that was discussed here. :|

And yes, once again, I've been doing that and yet the bar not only reappears but resets my customization. I'm not as stupid as I may seem and I understand you're trying to help, but none of that helps and I've already done. Restoring the default set does absolutely nothing because the Search Bar returns onto my Firefox even after having removed it. :/

Thanks for trying though.

Hi,

It's been what...barely 2 days and the bar is back. :| I changed the theme as you thought it had something to do with that and I've been using the same one for those two days.

I haven't installed any addons or extensions, or went to any site that I don't usually go to, and yet this bar is persistently returning, and I think it's mocking me.

Any more ideas?
