How do I retrieve password for Firefox sync

I've reset the password on my pc but can't remember it.

I need to sync with my laptop.

How can I get my password? 

If I can't, presumably I have to reset everything as per the dialogue box?

But what then happens to that account and data that is no longer in use? Is it erased?
